Call forwarding guide
How to forward calls on AT&T.
AT&T wireless forwarding is set on the phone itself, not online. An AT&T home phone line uses star codes dialled from that line.
Forward a wireless phone
- Open the call settings on the wireless phone. AT&T keeps per-model tutorials that show the exact menu on your phone.
- Turn on call forwarding and enter your OnAnswer247 number as the destination.
You can only change these settings from the phone. AT&T does not offer online management for wireless forwarding.
Turn wireless forwarding off
- Press #21# on the wireless phone, then the call, send, talk, or receiver key.
Forward a home phone line
- Lift the receiver on the home phone line and dial *72 or 72#. Listen for the dial tone.
- Enter your OnAnswer247 number. For long distance numbers, enter 1 first, then the 10-digit number.
- Wait for the confirmation tone. The system then calls your OnAnswer247 number. When that call is answered, forwarding is on.
If the line is busy or there is no answer, forwarding does not start. Repeat the steps. You will hear an error message if the number is not valid.
Turn home phone forwarding off
- Lift the receiver and dial *73 or 73#.
Busy, no answer, and ring count on a home line
Busy-line and don't-answer forwarding are set up by AT&T support: call 800.288.2020 and ask for help turning them on or off. To change how many rings pass before a missed call forwards, dial *47 at the dial tone, then a ring code at the second dial tone: 12 for 2 rings, 18 for 3, 24 for 4, 30 for 5, 36 for 6, 42 for 7, 48 for 8, 54 for 9, and 60 for 10.
Test it
Once you forward to your OnAnswer247 number, call your AT&T line from another phone. The assistant should answer. On a home line you may hear one brief ring first; that is normal and you cannot pick the call up while forwarding is on.
Common pitfalls
- Forwarding overrides wireless voicemail. Calls go to your OnAnswer247 number instead.
- If the destination number is busy, your callers hear a busy signal.
- You cannot forward wireless calls to an international number.
- Forwarded calls are billed for the length of the call. Long distance and roaming charges may apply, including when the destination is outside your home calling area.
- On a home line, extra local and long distance charges may apply to forwarded calls.
